“We’d like to help people be able to get the type of advantages that we’ve gotten.”

For Polly Ann Thompson, a 1967 graduate of the University of Chattanooga and a retired Delta Airlines executive, the path to a career in healthcare shouldn’t be blocked by early academic hurdles. That belief inspired her to launch the Thompson Scholars Program, a new summer initiative at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga that helps incoming students build a stronger foundation in math and science before they even start their first semester.

Set to begin in summer 2025, the Thompson Scholars Program is designed for students planning careers in healthcare — such as medicine or dentistry — who may need additional preparation in subjects like algebra and chemistry. Through a focused academic boot camp, participants will strengthen their knowledge in key areas and gain the confidence needed to succeed in health-related coursework.

“We were hearing from faculty that students want to go into healthcare, but they’re showing up unprepared in math and science,” Thompson said. “If we can help bridge that gap, then that’s exactly what we want to do.”

The program offers more than academic catch-up — it provides a critical launchpad. Students who complete the summer boot camp will begin the fall semester enrolled in chemistry together as a cohort, building community while reinforcing their learning.

The Thompson Scholar Program will reduce the attrition of students from the challenging pre-health curriculum by providing reviews and previews of essential material and a network of community support.

Thompson described the effort as a practical solution to a growing need.

“Your math and science skills are so important to get anywhere,” she said. “This program is about preparation and confidence.”

With her aviation background in mind, Polly Ann hopes the program will help students truly soar to success — giving them the tools and confidence to lift off into life-changing careers in healthcare.
